Foreword to the SEAN CD-rom

The Strategic Environmental Analysis-methodology (SEAN) has been developed to integrate (or 'mainstream') environmental sustainability issues into development planning to improve its sustainability. It was first published in 1997 by SNV as the SEA-reader (also translated in French and Spanish) and later (1999) revised and remodeled as the SEAN -Toolbox. For different reasons no CD-rom was included at that time, though that has been seriously considered. The distribution and use of the hardcopy Toolbox however is proven to be cumbersome and costly, so it has been decided to develop an additional SEAN-CD-rom. The interactive character of this CD-rom is still limited. It is a first step and we intent to improve on this in later instances.

Besides the complete Toolbox as a plain text, this CD-rom includes the following additional elements:

  • An interactive entry

  • An introductory summary on Environmental Assessment and Planning instruments

  • A brochure, giving a summary of the SEAN and further information

  • An Environmental Scan based on the SEAN methodology, developed get a first glance at the environmental issues, for example when the application of the SEAN itself meets hesitations.

  • A manual for Environmental Monitoring, published by SNV in 1998 (also in French and Spanish)

  • A Spanish elaboration of the Toolbox,  published by SNV-Honi (Honduras/Nicaragua) in 2001

  • A summary version in French of the SEAN Toolbox as a complete French version of the Toolbox does not yet exist.
