AIDEnvironment offers a core training programme based on the Strategic Environmental Analysis (SEAN) methodology. We also offer supplementary modules to provide a training programme that best matches your personal needs and the requirements of your organisation. AIDEnvironment trainers have practical experience in the analysis, planning and evaluation of world-wide development projects.

The SEAN Training Programme
The core training is structured around six modules. It involves an intensive programme of lectures, case studies and individual assignments and study. The six modules cover three full days, the modules seven to thirteen can be given supplementary to this training programme according to specific needs. Each module can be worked out with a specific emphasis on a certain region, ecosystem or sector.

Module Module content
Module 1 : Introduction to SEAN Providing insight on the background, objectives and potential uses of SEAN within the policy cycle; providing basic information on the five process phases of SEAN and its ten methodological steps
Module 2 : Basic concepts and principles of ecology Providing insight on basic concepts and principles of ecology for sustainable development, which form a main framework in the SEAN methodology
Module 3 : Ten methodological steps of SEAN
Providing insight on the objectives, inputs, tools and outputs of the ten methodological steps of SEAN, using a recent SEAN case study as an example
Module 4 : Five process phases of SEAN and experiences Providing insight on the objectives and approach of the five process phases of SEAN, using a recent case study as an example; providing an overview of recent experiences
Module 5 : Magnification Providing insight in vision and magnification and strategy formulation related to organisations, programmes and projects
Module 6 : Making strategic choices Providing insight in making strategic choices and how to identify strategic partners, using opportunity and problem analyses, involving different actors and building alliances with partners. How to make strategic choices in planning of integrated development and conservation projects and sustainable development interventions
Module 7 (optional) : Strategic model projects for integration of development and biodiversity conservation Providing insight in core and non-core projects and their linkage with logical framework planning to plan integrated development and conservation projects
Module 8 (optional) : Environment and causes of conflicts Providing insight on the multiple causes of conflicts, and on the interrelations between a conflict and environmental problems
Module 9 (optional) : Natural resource accounting Ensuring understanding of the relations between environment and economics; practical methods and instruments of natural resource accounting and economic valuation of natural resource-use systems for specific cases
Module 10 (optional): Monitoring environmental change Providing insight and tools for the environmental monitoring of projects and for setting-up of a monitoring system; providing insight in the sustainable development indicators and the relation with strategic planning
Module 11 (optional) : Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
Providing an overview of regulatory provisions and practice in EIA, the application of EIA techniques at each stage in the appraisal process and environmental profiles; the relation between EIA and SEAN
Module 12 (optional) : General functioning of ecosystems Per ecosystem, providing insight on main human resource-use systems, key environmental problems and opportunities, and on current trends and solution strategies (forest, wetlands, mangrove, savannah, coastal areas)
Module 13 (optional) : Trade Cycle Analysis (TCA) Learning to identify opportunities for conservation and sustainable resource management through strategic analysis of resource based trade, capital flows and the actors involved

Training duration: Three days from 9.00 till 17.00 or extended with one day optional (choice for added modules)

The Netherlands: The course fee includes tuition, course materials, and coffee and lunches during the day. Prices are provisional. AIDEnvironment can also offer accommodation and logistic/travel organisation in the Netherlands. Special rates apply for groups larger than four persons.
Abroad: The training abroad is the first part of the execution of SEAN analysis in the field. Two moderators will train and assist the participant group up to 30 persons. For more specific information about the programme abroad please contact the co-ordinator.
