The 5 phases

The SEAN process phases provide guidance to participants in organising the process of applying the ten SEAN steps. There are a number of principles guiding the application of these process phases. The main objectives of each phase and the relationships with the analytical steps are clarified in the figure below.

Preparation Execution Follow-up
Phase 1 : General orientation, initiation, preparation and organisation of the SEAN process

Phase 2 : Scoping.

Document review and scoping workshop(s) with relevant actors to identify key issues and gaps of knowledge.

Scoping of steps 1-8, introduction on steps 9-10

Phase 5 : Set-up of monitoring system, institutionalising the SEAN process.

Phase 3 : Fieldwork.

Field work, desk work and studies focused on key issues identified in phase 2, per sector, target group, region and/or actor
In depth elements of steps 1-8, inputs for steps 9-10

Phase 4 : Planning.

Defining inputs for a strategic plan for sustainable development, integration with other analyses, finalising other desirable outputs.
Final check elements of steps 1-8, application step 9

Step 10

For more information about each SEAN process phase, click on the phase on the top of this page. It gives the objectives, main activities, timing, participants and expected outputs for each phase. In some cases it can be sufficient to undertake a quick scan, using the SEAN light approach. This would basically be one workshop, similar to the scoping workshop highlighted above.
