By mid 2002 the SEAN method has been applied numerous times in several countries. Most common has been the application for supporting the formulation of an integrated development strategy at regional or local level, for instance in Cameroon, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Benin, Honduras and Nicaragua. The applications show much flexibility, which is a strength of the method. Take a look at the overview for these details, or take a look at the practioners.

In terms of scale:

  • At national level: formulation of a sustainable development strategy for Cape Verde
  • At regional level: formulation of sustainable development strategy for Atacora (Benin)
  • At local level: municipality plans in Honduras, in Croatia

In terms of objectives:

  • Formulation of an integrated development strategy for a certain area: see above
  • Formulation of a sectoral strategy: wetland strategy in Benin
  • Formulation of an organisational strategy: SNV in Cameroon

In terms of the owner of the process:

  • Government agencies: national or decentralised government agencies
  • Non-governmental organisation: strategy on sustainable development by environmental NGOs in Botswana (see: www.envngo.co.bw)

In terms of time required:

  • Rapid applications taking only one workshop of a few days
  • Applications taking more than 1 year
